El 17 de enero de 1958 se funda el primer canal de televisión del Perú. El nombre escogido por el gobierno de Manuel Prado Ugarteche fue Garcilaso de la Vega OAD – TV Canal 7, en honor del escritor hispano-incaico nacido en la ciudad de Cusco en 1539.
En la inauguración estuvo presente por el ilustre Jorge Basadre G., quien ocupaba el cargo de Ministro de Educación. También participaron representantes de la UNESCO que financio la iniciativa con 22 mil dólares.

La sede del canal del estado fue el Ministerio de Educación, en ese entonces instalado en el Parque Universitario, en el centro histórico de Lima.
Después de su primera emisión la estación televisiva fue lanzada de manera experimental. La escuela de electrónica del Ministerio de Educación, se encargó la operación de la señal que operaba emitía señal tres veces por semana.
Los primeros programas de la televisión peruana fueron quince minutos de canciones, un informativo del canal, melodías de antaño, álbum criollo, entre otros programas de corte educativo.
Fernando Vivas Sambroso en su libro «En Vivo y en Directo: Historia de la Televisión Peruana» señala que en ese entonces alrededor de 5 mil familias limeñas tenían un televisor, que tenían acceso a la escasa producción televisiva estatal.
El 15 de diciembre de ese año fecha inaugura del canal 4, primera estación de la televisión del Perú de carácter privado, de la mano de Antonio Umbert Féllez y Nicanor González Vásquez.
LA TELEVISIÓN EN AREQUIPA
En Arequipa el primer canal de televisión fue Televisora Sur Peruana TSP Canal 2, fundado en 1959 con apoyo de la Universidad Nacional de San Agustín (UNSA). Gustavo Quintanilla Paulet descendiente de Pedro Paulet y Jack Dwyer, gerente local de la Coca Cola impulsaron proyecto.
Según Fernando Vivas la primera transmisión de prueba, se realizó en circuito cerrado en enero de ese año. En el Teatro Municipal se instalaron una serie de televisores ubicados
en la calle, llamando la atención de la población.
La inauguración de la señal abierta ocurrió el 15 de agosto de 1959. El canal se instaló en el «Pabellón de la Cultura» en calle San Agustín. En la actividad estuvo el presidente Manuel Prado Ugarteche.
En la transmisión inaugural también estuvo presentó la Miss Universo de 1957, la peruana Gladys Zender, primera hispanoamericana en ganar ese certamen de belleza.
Los primeros programas fueron conferencias y diálogos académicos dirigidos por docentes de la UNSA, un noticiero con fotos fijas, un espacio culinario auspiciado por una marca de aceite.
Luego se incluirían zarzuelas y telenovelas en vivo. La primera telenovela fue el «El secreto de Sor Teresa», dirigida por Alfredo Cano.
