Era el 14 de agosto de 1996, una noche que prometía ser memorable en la Ciudad Blanca. Como cada año, Arequipa se preparaba para celebrar su aniversario con una serenata multitudinaria, un evento que reunía a miles de personas en las céntricas avenidas de la ciudad. El escenario principal estaba situado en la Av. La Marina y el puente Grau se convirtió en un punto de paso obligado para las multitudes que deseaban disfrutar de los fuegos artificiales y de la esperada presentación de la cantante Laura León.

La ciudad estaba llena de vida. Miles de personas abarrotaban las calles, en medio de una noche que, hasta ese momento, se había teñido solo de júbilo y celebración. Sin embargo, poco antes de la medianoche, la alegría de los asistentes se convirtió en horror.
TRAGEDIA EN EL PUENTE GRAU
Un fuego artificial, parte del espectáculo pirotécnico que había comenzado minutos antes, se desvió de su trayectoria prevista y golpeó unos cables de alta tensión que cruzaban el puente Grau. En un instante, los cables se desprendieron y cayeron sobre la multitud que se encontraba en el puente.
Una descarga eléctrica de 10,000 voltios atravesó los cuerpos de las personas que estaban allí, sin darles tiempo de reaccionar. El cielo, que momentos antes se iluminaba con colores festivos, se oscureció con el humo y el caos.
El pánico se apoderó de la multitud. Gritos, carreras desesperadas y cuerpos que caían al suelo sin vida, calcinados por la descarga. La confusión era total, y el puente Grau, símbolo de la conexión entre los distritos de la ciudad, se convirtió en el epicentro de una tragedia que dejó a 35 personas muertas y una cantidad similar de heridos.
NACE UN HEROE
La cantidad de fallecidos pudo incrementarse sino es por la decidida acción del suboficial de la PNP Benito Zapata quien corrió hasta la estación de energía de SEAL situada a unos 200 metros del puente Grau y consiguió que se corte el servicio de energía eléctrica.
Las celebraciones se detuvieron de inmediato. Las autoridades, conmocionadas por lo ocurrido, suspendieron todos los eventos previstos y declararon luto en la ciudad.
NADIE FUE A PRISIÓN POR LA TRAGEDIA
El alcalde de entonces, Roger Cáceres Pérez, responsabilizó a la empresa de fuegos artificiales, mientras los ciudadanos, sumidos en el dolor, buscaban respuestas a un hecho que nunca debería haber ocurrido.
Con el paso del tiempo, la tragedia de 1996 se convirtió en un recordatorio constante de la fragilidad de la vida y de la importancia de la seguridad en eventos masivos. Hoy, cada 14 de agosto, Arequipa celebra su aniversario con un tono de respeto y memoria.
Este triste hecho fue judicializado y el Poder Judicial el 2004 resolvió dictar una sentencia de carácter suspendida salvando a Héctor Arias Cáceres – dueño de la empresa de pirotecnia- de ir a prisión. El empresario era acusado del delito de homicidio culposo.
