En octubre de 1932 Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón de 24 años inició el camino de de la mayor proeza como aviador civil de Arequipa. Una hazaña olvidada por el tiempo, por esos años fue noticias en tres países.
Como parte del Raid Internacional Argentina, Chile y Perú de 1932, consiguió dos marcas personales. Primero se convirtió en el segundo aviador civil en superar con éxito la cordillera de los Andes entre los volcanes Tupungato y Aconcagua que unen y separan a la vez Argentina de Chile. Para ello debía superar más de 6 mil metros de altura.

Además, se convirtió en el primer aviador arequipeño en volar sobre la ruta que utilizó el libertador San Martín y su Ejército Libertador del Perú en 1820 viajando desde Mendoza hasta Lima.
Los raids eran prueba deportiva de resistencia que consistía en cruzar volando los Alpes, el Atlántico el Pacífico, los Andes, entre otros. Esos vuelos civiles sirvieron para crear luego las rutas comerciales usadas durante el siglo XX.
VUELO SOBRE LA CORDILLERA DE LOS ANDES
La hazaña del ilustre arequipeño, la cuenta en detalle José Renato Ballón Cusirramos en su tesis de maestro en historia «Juan Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón y la Aviación en Arequipa en el Primer Siglo XX».
Según detalla el avión bautizado por el mismo Rodríguez Ballón como «Cóndor» era un biplano de la marca Spartan C3. propulsado por un motor Walter de 120 HP (caballos de fuerza), fuselaje de aluminio, madera y tela de 9 metros de ancho por 7 metros de largo. El avión costo 5 mil 250 dólares.
En la edición del diario El Deber del 21 de octubre de 1932 el avión fue descrito de la siguiente manera «El fuselaje está pintado de café y las alas de amarillo. Junto al motor tiene la inscripción Cóndor y también Raid Mendoza- Lima. En la cola están pintadas las banderas argentina, chilena y peruana, los tres países que cruza en su raid.»
El domingo 16 de octubre de 1932 el piloto arequipeño partió del campo aéreo de Los Tamarindos (actual aeropuerto Los Plumerillos de Mendoza, Argentina) rumbo a Santiago de Chile. Partió a las 10 de la mañana y arribó a la 3 de la tarde al campo aéreo El Bosque en Santiago de Chile.
En su trayecto superó la cordillera de los Andes entre los volcanes Tupungato y Aconcagua, a más de 6 mil 700 mil metros de altura. Actualmente los aviones comerciales realizan la misma ruta, pero a 12 mil metros de altura.
En la edición del 22 de octubre de 1932 del diario Noticias se puede leer lo manifestado por Rodríguez Ballón. «La máquina se ha portado espléndidamente bien… cuando me encontraba sobre sus cumbres heladas… el avión perdió un poco de altura y pase a lo más de unos diez o quince metros sobre los picos»
La segunda parte de su viaje inicio el lunes 17 de octubre. Partió de Santiago de Chile, haciendo parada de un día en Copiapó, en Antofagasta por otras 24 horas, Iquique en la región de Tarapacá. Allí solo permaneció unas horas.
Su travesía por territorio chileno culmino el 20 de octubre. Arribó a Arica a las 3 y media de la tarde aterrizando en campo de aviación “El Morro”, campo alterno de aterrizaje del puerto.
DE REGRESO EN AREQUIPA
Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón era esperado con ansias en Arequipa. Partió de suelo chileno el 21 de octubre rumbo a su tierra natal, haciendo una parada de algunas horas en Tacna. La Comisión Patriótica de Damas Tacneñas, le hicieron una invitación que no pudo despreciar.
De acuerdo a lo previsto llegó ese mismo día de la Ciudad Blanca. El diario El Deber informó de la siguiente manera sobre su arribo al campo de aviación de Porongoche, ubicado entre el Hipódromo. Hoy en día allí se ubica un centro comercial.
«Cerca de las diez y media de la mañana se avistó el avión de Rodríguez Ballón que ha sido bautizado con el nombre de Cóndor… Después de dar una vuelta a la población, perfiló el aparato al campo de aviación aterrizando por el lado de la ciudad en pequeño espacio, revelando la maestría del piloto»

En la ciudad les ofrecieron dos ceremonias. A las 4 de la tarde en el Consejo Provincial y la otra, a las 6 y media de la tarde en el Jockey Club de Arequipa organizada por los socios del club hípico y los miembros de la Liga Pro Aviación Departamental. Todas las autoridades de la ciudad estuvieron presentes.
El diario El Pueblo en su edición del 22 de octubre indico recordó su amor por la aviación desde su niñez. Además, aseguro que con ahínco y tenacidad había logrado llegar volando a su tierra natal y a su patria.
En su palabras finales dijo «y ahora me tiene nuevamente en la patria.. .Además estoy a órdenes de la patria, cuando se halle en peligro de una conflagración nacional». Unos días después se enrolaría en la fuerza aérea peruana para participar en el conflicto con Colombia, donde perdió la vida.
Arribó a Lima
De acuerdo a lo previsto el 23 de octubre de 1932 arribó a Lima a las 3 y 15 de la tarde. Así concluyo el raid internacional de Mendoza a Lima en 26 horas de vuelo en 5 días. Recorrió 6 mil kilómetros a más de 6 mil 700 metros de altura. El diario El Comercio informó de la siguiente manera.
«Los relojes de Las Palmas apuntaron las 3.15 de la tarde, cuando por el lado extremo del campo por encima de los cerros que se distinguen hacia la izquierda, se dejó ver un pequeño punto, que fue agrandándose rápidamente hasta tomar los contornos del avión de características completamente desconocidas en Las Palmas. Era la máquina de Rodríguez Ballón que internándose como si tomara rumbo a Lima»

El 23 y 24 de octubre el arequipeño recibió en el casino de la Escuela Jorge Chávez y luego en la Escuela de Aviación Militar Jorge Chávez participo de una ceremonia de felicitación y un almuerzo acompañado de las principales autoridades del Cuerpo de Aviación del Perú.
TRATADO Y ENROLAMIENTO
El 25 de octubre el día de su cumpleaños participo de una ceremonia en Palacio de Gobierno con el presidente Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro. Allí ocurrieron dos sucesos revidenciados por la investigación de José Renato Ballón Cusirramos.
En su parada en Santiago de Chile en sobre cerrado Rodríguez Ballón trajeron consigo el documento en sobre lacrado. En el interior trasladó los acuerdos de la incorporación de Tacna al Perú, remitidos por el embajador peruano en Santiago, el doctor César Elguera, que entregó en la casa de Pizarro.
Además de agradecer al presidente Sánchez Cerro por invitarlo a palacio de gobierno, expresó al mandatario su intención de ponerse al servicio de la patria en defensa de la soberanía nacional.
El 21 de febrero de 1933 cuando volaba rumbo a la frontera con Colombia a sumarse a la defensa del territorio nacional en el contexto del conflicto con ese país, su avión cayó al río Nieva, afluente del río Marañón. Murió al instante.
