El Instituto del Mar del Perú (IMARPE) realizó el monitoreo anual del “camarón de río” en la cuenca del río Ocoña, en la región Arequipa, con el objetivo de contar con información científica actualizada sobre su estado biológico y poblacional. Los estudios permitirán contribuir a su ordenamiento y promoción de estrategias para su aprovechamiento racional y sostenible.

Los profesionales del Área Funcional de Investigaciones en Recursos de Aguas Continentales del IMARPE efectuaron registros en 23 estaciones durante ocho días; en los que extractores camaroneros de la zona capturaron ejemplares vivos de camarón, empleando el método de “buceo a pulmón” a través de “barridos” en contra corriente y en estratos altitudinales desde los 700 msnm hasta la desembocadura del río Ocoña.
Asimismo, se realizaron muestreos biométricos y biológicos de los ejemplares capturados, con el fin de determinar la estructura de tallas, relación longitud-peso, proporción sexual y estado reproductivo, así como los parámetros poblacionales de la especie.
Cabe indicar que en Arequipa desde diciembre hasta marzo el camarón de río es puesto en veda para evitar su depredación. Durante se tiempo el crustáceo se reproduce en los ríos de la región.
ESTUDIO DEL AGUA
En cada estación de muestreo se registraron las características físicas y químicas del agua, como temperatura, potencial de hidrógeno, oxígeno disuelto, dióxido de carbono, alcalinidad total, dureza total, cloro, conductividad eléctrica y sólidos totales disueltos; ello con el propósito de comprender aspectos ecosistémicos y establecer la relación recurso-ambiente.

El grupo de trabajo estuvo acompañado de la bióloga nigeriana Oluwayemisi Osodein, estudiante de la Universidad de Bremen (Alemania), quien está desarrollando una tesis de maestría empleando modelos de dinámica poblacional del camarón del río.
